Classic Album Review: Charalambides | Joy Shapes

The Austin drone merchants unspool a soundtrack for the horror movie in your mind.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you’ve heard one improvisational ambient-drone psychedelic-folk trio from Texas, you’ve heard them all.

Mainly because there is only one I know of: Austin’s Charalambides. And their 75-minute Joy Shapes is just as unique, with five epic tracks of music-box melody and ethereal vocals that patiently evolve into creepy swaths of haunting minimalism. It’s the soundtrack for the horror movie playing behind your eyes.
