Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Limbo Soundtrack

One so-so Springsteen track does not an essential soundtrack make.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Springsteen fans be warned: The big selling point for this soundtrack to John Sayles’ new Alaskan drama is a new, unreleased Bruce track.

But Lift Me Up isn’t exactly up there is Streets Of Philadelphia. Heck, it’s not even up there with 57 Channels And Nothing On. Like most of his new work, it’s another brooding, minimalist ballad — but sung in falsetto. And it’s about as appealing as it sounds. The rest of the disc can best be summed up in four words: Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio sings. This is even less appealing than it sounds. Limbo? More like musical purgatory.
