Classic Album Review: Cex | Starship Galactica

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Chicago techno-nerd Rjyan (Cex) Kidwell delights in mixing pop culture references, hip-hop cliches, sophomoric gags and glitchy techno. This four-year-old EP may not be his most inspired work, but its anything-goes juxtaposition of broad laffs and beguiling grooves makes for an interesting listen.

FIRST RELEASED: 2001.

HIGHLIGHTS: The lurching, fuzzy clatter of Cal And Brady Style; the skittery soul of Cex Can Kiss My Soft, Sensuous Lips; the kiddie pop-rock of the title cut.

EXTRAS! EXTRAS! A live ’80s-rock version of the title cut — along with three unreleased, less-interesting bonus tracks that seem to be included mainly to pad out the disc from 22 to 45 minutes.
