Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Connie & Carla Soundtrack

Unless you're a fan, this soundtrack falls flatter than a drag queen in new platforms.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

I know this may come as a shock to you, but I have not seen Connie And Carla. Nothing against dinner theatre, drag queens or Nia Vardalos; it’s just not my cup of tea.

But that does make it tough to review this soundtrack, which consists mostly of show tunes sung by Vardalos and co-star Toni Collette, intercut with bits of dialogue from the flick. On the one hand, I can imagine that those who have seen the film might enjoy hearing the pair gamely but amateurishly warble their way through a half-hour of Broadway cheese like Don’t Rain On My Parade and Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina. For the rest of us, though, this underproduced affair quickly falls flatter than a drag queen in new platforms.
