Classic Album Review: Bob Dylan | Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 – Concert at Philharmonic Hall

This set captures Zimmy at the height of his career and his powers as a folksinger.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE SKINNY: A couple of years earlier, he was playing clubs in Greenwich Village. Less than a year later, he would plug in an electric guitar and take his music in new directions.

But on Halloween night 1964, when this legendary show was taped, Bob Dylan was at the height of his career and his powers as an acoustic folksinger. Brandishing only an acoustic guitar, a harmonica and his trademark nasal vocals, young Zimmy effortlessly captivates a feisty New York City crowd with his starring songcraft and surprisingly playful persona. (When someone requests Mary Had A Little Lamb, Dylan cracks, “God, did I record that?”)

THE OLDIES: Magnificent versions of The Times They Are A-Changin’, It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding), Mr. Tambourine Man, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, It Ain’t Me Babe, All I Really Want to Do and plenty more on this two-disc set.

THE GOODIES: A few songs featuring vocals from then-paramour Joan Baez; a 56-page book.
