Ancient History Offers You His Zero Dollar Consolation Prize

The Pittsburgh artist connects effect-driven, lo-fi experimentation to straightforward songs rooted in tried-and-true indie sensibility on his first album in seven long years.

Ancient History plays to win with the electronica-laced pop-rock of his new album Zero Dollar Consolation Prize — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The third album and first release in seven years from Pittsburgh artist and musician Don Ducote, Zero Dollar Consolation Prize connects effect-driven, lo-fi experimentation to straightforward songs rooted in tried-and-true indie sensibility. Highlights of the 10-song album include Never (Go Away), a catchy indie electronica track à la LCD Soundsystem that serves as a musical reckoning with one’s flaws; Saint Thin Air, an ode to those who fade away from your life highlighted by some killer trumpet from producer Dane Adelman; and Home Safe, written about a period of drinking to forget and trying to stay alive in the process — and featuring dreamy supporting vocals from Century III’s Sarah Ellis.

Ducote’s past musical endeavors placed him in some of the nation’s most active music scenes, from New York to Los Angeles, where he was able to work with two-time Grammy winner Chris Kasych, serve as a production and songwriting consultant for U.K.-based songwriter Emma Gillespie and record live at Adrian Grenier’s Wreckroom. As Ancient History, Ducote made waves with early LPs Tracks (2013) and Good Friend Electrical (2017), earning accolades in esteemed music publications.

Since relocating to Pittsburgh, Ducote has left an indelible mark on the local music scene. During his time as co-owner/A&R for Pittsburgh-based Wild Kindness Records, Ducote signed and produced work by bands including Slugss, Rave Ami (formerly Honey), It It, Dinosoul, Thousandzz of Beez and Bat Zuppel. In addition to performing his own music, Ducote now offers studio support and production guidance to local recording artists, and serves as co-owner of popular eatery and music venue Spirit.
