Classic Album Review: Alice Cooper | The Eyes of Alice Cooper

The ’70s icon returns to the glammier, hammier days of his shock-rock youth.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Let’s face it: By now, almost everyone has given up on Alice Cooper. Perhaps deservedly so — his last handful of albums have been dismal affairs.

Well, here’s the good news: The Eyes of Alice Cooper, his two-dozenth (or so) studio album by my count, ain’t half bad. Especially in comparison the post-industrial nü-metal sludge of predecessors Dragontown and Brutal Planet. For this instalment, The Coop and his latest band of young bucks return to the glammier, hammier days of his shock-rock youth with chugging power-chord anthems like What Do You Want From Me?, Man Of The Year and the Gary Glittery ode to the ’60s rock scene of Detroit City. No, The Eyes of Alice Cooper can’t hold a candle to Easy Action or Billion Dollar Babies. But it might be his best album since, oh, Flush The Fashion. And coming from a guy everybody gave up on, that ain’t half bad.
