Classic Album Review: Me’Shell NdegéOcello | Comfort Woman

The singer-bassist finds the G-spot in zero-G on her sexy sixth album.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

For Me’Shell NdegéOcello, love may be the drug — and space is definitely the place.

The ever-eclectic and experimental singer-bassist is simultaneously out of this world and down to earth on her sexy sixth album Comfort Woman. “Beyond the stars is where I’m from … I come from a world made of love,” claims Me’Shell, and she’s not kidding. These 10 smouldering cuts are nothing short of a soundtrack to starlit romance, with hypnotically swaying soul and reggae grooves, throbbing below-the-belt basslines, funky guitars, spacious arrangements, swirly Milky Way synths and — most crucially— NdegéOcello’s come-hither crooning about the spirituality of sensuality. Or, to put it another way: With Comfort Woman, NdegéOcello finds the connection between the G-spot and zero-G.
