Classic Album Review: JP Hoe | The Here In Review

The Winnipeg artist offers old-school troubadourism dressed in new pop threads.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

HOME BASE: Right here, right now.

GENRE: Old-school troubadourism dressed in new pop threads.

REVIEW: Singer-songwriter JP Hoe likes to say he’s following in the footsteps of folkies and folk like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Dave Matthews. On his EP The Here In Review, he might want to add a few more names — like John Mayer, Ryan Adams and Pete Yorn. With his warm vocals, strummy grooves, rich melodies and deftly crafted tunes that toe the line between roots, folk, pop and rock, Hoe displays massive potential for mass appeal. A few more strong choruses wouldn’t hurt, but in general, everything you need is right Here.
