Pol sweep you up and transport you back to the glory days of ’80s new wave with the stylish, sleek sophistication of their alluring self-titled debut EP — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
Crafted by Dutch brothers Ruben and Matthijs Pol, this haunting and hypnotic five-track offering looks to bring New Wave to the forefront once again with a dynamic new take on the genre. Combining retro synth-pop with elements of post-punk, goth, glam, new romantic and more, the siblings fashion a unique sonic landscape that radiates cool in every sense of the word.
Lead single L’Amour Fait Mal exemplifies this sound, crafting a rich analogue soundscape of textured synth lines and driving drum beats that sit behind a characteristically wistful vocal performance that ties the track together. “L’Amour Fait Mal is a harmonious blend of upbeat energy and poignant melancholy, encapsulating the essence of a new-wave love song,” the brothers say.
Highly expressive in their songwriting, the brothers took inspiration from their own personal experiences while writing the EP. Their tracks examine toxic masculinity, finding their place in the world, as well as their complex web of relationships with the people around them. “Many of the songs carry deeper personal meanings beyond their initial simplicity,” they say. “This emotional journey has been both heavy and rewarding, as we refused to settle for anything less than our best (with our current capabilities).”
Based out of Amsterdam, Pol have released three singles from the EP so far — Comme Ça, Boys Are and Modern Strange Love — garnering praise from far and wide while earning more than 1 million streams. Beyond music the two brothers channel forms of expression from their work in the high-fashion industry, modelling for various houses. With the release of their debut EP, Pol aim to capitalize on their previous success as they bring their music to the masses.
