Classic Album Review: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club | Take Them On, On Your Own

The rockers' turbo-charged 2003 model revs higher, runs longer and burns cleaner.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

When the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club first roared into town three years ago, everyone admired the way they custom-built a sleek, powerful machine out of old spare parts — the primal timing of The Stooges, the dark menace of The Velvet Underground, the turbocharged fuzz-mania of My Bloody Valentine, the glammy decadence of T. Rex.

But after a few years, folks are usually ready for a trade-in. And BRMC are only happy to oblige. After investing time in some new R&D, these L.A.-based noise-rockers have unveiled their 2003 model — a turbo-charged performance model that revs higher, runs longer and burns cleaner. Fuelled by tight fist-pumping beats, laced with stadium-sized Britrock melodies and driven by buzzy guitar licks and searing solos, Take Them On, On Your Own is as aggressive as its title, getting in your face about war, violence and government corruption even as its black-clad mechanics fire on all cylinders. No, they haven’t reinvented the wheel. But they just might have improved the ride a bit.
