Classic Album Review: Kings Of Leon | Youth And Young Manhood

The Nashville rockers' rock your world and make you groove with their killer debut.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

They’re a little bit country. They’re a little bit rock ’n’ roll. They’re a little bit gospel. But they won’t save your soul.

They’re rootsy like Tom Petty. They’re punky like The Strokes. Their bluesy numbers get down. Their rowdy numbers smoke. This is their debut album. It choogles and it moves. Some songs will rock your world. Some will make you groove. The singer has a gritty drawl. The guitars twang and chime. Trani sounds like a Lou Reed song. But I like Wasted Time. Three of the band are brothers. They’re all a preacher’s boys. The fourth one is their cousin. They make a damn fine noise. They grew up in the south. Nashville is their home. They are the Kings of Leon. And this is my little poem.
