Classic Album Review: The Robert Cray Band | Time Will Tell

The blues singer-guitarist stays in his comfort zone on his latest predictable set.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

“People say I’m dangerous,” claims Robert Cray on Time Will Tell. I sure hope he’s kidding.

I’d hate to have to be the one to tell him “dangerous” isn’t the word that leaps to most folks’ minds when they think of him. “Bluesy” and “soulful” are more like it — maybe even “funky” and “groovy” now and then. Thing is, though, lately there’s been another word that describes Cray: Predictable. While his rich butterscotch voice, tasteful guitar solos and smooth Memphis-style songcraft haven’t diminished in quality over the years, they haven’t progressed or even changed much, either. Which puts the 10-song Time Will Tell in a rather awkward position — it’s a solid and satisfying effort (especially the anti-war number Survivor), but no more so than his last few efforts. If Cray wants to get out of that rut, he’s going to have to be less of a stranger to danger.
