Katelyn Lehner puts her money where her mouth is in her new country-pop single 10 Bucks — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The leadoff track from the Saskatchewan singer-songwriter’s latest EP, 10 Bucks doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to not taking itself too seriously and, at the same time, manages to touch on a classic subject matter we’ve all experienced: The Breakup.
10 Bucks is for those of us who need to share a few thoughts about our ex at 3 a.m. in a karaoke bar after a few drinks. And boy, the whole bar will be singing along. It’s infectious in a good way. Although pop in its roots, it doesn’t shy away from the classic country vibe featuring plenty of lap steel, slide electric guitar, and plucky banjo for country lovers. It rolls along with an upbeat tempo, allowing Lehner’s sweet vocals to shine, especially during the catchy-as-heck chorus:
“Imma bet ya 10 bucks
He gon call me in a week
Saying that he couldn’t sleep without me there
Imma bet ya 10 bucks
He’ll be down on his knees
Saying pretty baby please come back to me
“But I’ve been doing OK
And I think we’re both better off this way
Imma bet ya 10 bucks
That he won’t agree
That’s just more money in my pocket.”
The video has the same sort of attitude, with an entertaining story that takes her from a cheating boyfriend to pure pop success — clad in a dress made from actual $10 bills. Not photocopied, not printed fabric, but real money. “Originally, we had planned to order in prop money,” Lehner explains. “Turns out it’s not as easy to find Canadian prop money as it is to find American prop money. So I went out to the ATM and started withdrawing.
“Creating this music video was one of the most challenging but most fun projects I’ve ever been a part of. From the treatment to locations to wardrobe, I had a hand in every aspect of this video. I wanted to bring this song to life in a way that was entertaining to the viewer.”
Not only is Lehner making waves in her hometown; she’s also turning heads farther afield. Hailing from Saskatoon, she was named North Sask Music Zine’s 2022 Artist of the Year and has opened for acts like Dean Brody, George Canyon, Blue Rodeo and Tenille Arts. Her ability to meld that classic country and western sound with contemporary pop is effortless, having enough of each genre to please both sides of the fence — not unlike early Taylor Swift, Faith Hill and Shania Twain.
