Classic Album Review: Manitoba (Caribou) | Start Breaking My Heart

Canadian producer Dan Snaith drops a disc of classic bedroom-laptop electronica.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

He grew up in Dundas, Ont. He lives in Toronto. And he doesn’t sound like many Manitoba musicians you’ve ever heard.

Truth be told, you kinda have to wonder why electronica composer Dan Snaith picked that province to use as his musical handle. Until you actually listen to his music, that is. Then it all starts to make sense. Often inspired by and reminiscent of Aphex Twin, Snaith’s work — particularly on his debut full-length Start Breaking My Heart — is classic bedroom-laptop electronica, jauntily grooving to quirky low-impact grooves and happily coasting along to frisky, easygoing melodies. The landscape is simultaneously chilly yet welcoming, constantly changing yet consistent, and enjoyable and current without being anoyingly pretentious or ground-breakingly trendy. I don’t know about you, but that seems like a pretty apt description of Manitoba to me.
