This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Supposedly, nobody thought Winnipeg actress Nia Vardalos would make it in Hollywood. And nobody thought her little romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding would be a hit movie.
So one can only assume that nobody believes for a second that this enjoyable collection of Greek folk music — both traditional-sounding fare from the likes of Alexandros Xenofontos and the more contemporary romantic pieces from Chris Wilson and Alexander Janko — to be a chart-topper. Which means, judging by the way things have been going lately, this disc will likely cop a World Music Grammy, an Oscar, and several awards yet to be named next year. Talk about a big fat success story.
