Classic Album Review: Dan Castellaneta | I Am Not Homer

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Unfortunately, he means it.

Simpsons fans will be disappointed if they pick up this comedy disc by Dan Castellaneta expecting to spend some quality time with Homer, Krusty, Barney, Groundskeeper Willie and the many other characters he voices on the show. Aside from one Simpsons song — a mildly humourous little ditty called So Dumb — Castellaneta spends most of I Am Not Homer (which plays on the title of Leonard Nimoy’s 1975 memoir I Am Not Spock) doing improv with his wife Deb Lacusta a la Nichols and May. At least you hope this is improv; if Castellaneta actually sat down and wrote these cliche bits about wacky talk-show callers, bickering announcers, motivational speakers, dumb rock stars and bizarre horoscopes, that’s even more disappointing. Not Homer is just not that funny. Don’t quit your day job, Dan.
