The Independent Sound transforms personal uncertainty into sure-footed pop perfection with the irresistible single I Feel Like I’m Missing — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
“I Feel Like I’m Missing is a song that will get stuck in your head (and you’ll never want it to leave),” the Canadian artist says. “It’s the soundtrack to summer and the bittersweet experience of finding yourself in the big city.”
A highlight of the enigmatic multi-talent’s ambitious anthology The Synthesis Collection: The Early Naughts, the Michael Jacksonesque I Feel Like I’m Missing hits the mark in every respect. Expressing deep and sometimes contradictory feelings, the lyrics and music tell a story of the imperative and excitement of independence counterposed against the longing for the safety and familiarity of home. The mantra-like words and soothing vocals go perfectly with the circular nature of the guitar line and the direct simplicity of the rhythm and arrangement. In addition to the composition evoking visceral emotions, there’s a superb blend of sounds and styles — classic ’80s pop and jazz, R&B, hip-hop and more.
This synergistic combination of multiple genres into one guitar-driven pop composition is the hallmark of Jank music — a sub-genre of pop created by The Independent Sound to capture what feelings sound like in music. The multi-talented artist not only supplies the vocal on I Feel Like I’m Missing, but also plays bass, drums, lead guitar and synths. He also arranged, produced and mixed the recording, with rhythm guitar played by The Independent Sound and his longtime collaborator / former OBC bandmate Jared Matthew Weiss. The music and melody of I Feel Like I’m Missing were composed by The Independent Sound, with lyrics and additional guitar by JMW.
The Independent Sound created I Feel Like I’m Missing based on patterns of percussion crafted into custom drum compositions. He further layered percussive lead lines into every instrument, but most importantly the guitar. The Independent Sound’s compositions are unique in their application of drum patterns to non-percussion instruments and the use of intricate guitar parts that function as both percussion and melody. What makes his sound distinctive is a synthesis between legato and staccato, as well as polyrhythmic elements that transcend traditional genres.
