Classic Album Review: Chris Cummings | Ooh! That Could Cost Him the Gold, Bob

The New Brunswick singer-songwriter kicks up his heels on his upbeat third album.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Country is one of the few musical styles where you’re allowed to have some fun — and Canadian crooner Chris Cummings takes full advantage of the opportunity on his third full-length Ooh! That Could Cost Him the Gold, Bob.

If the title isn’t enough of a tipoff, lighthearted roots-pop twangers like Pamela Anderson is in My Bedroom, Meet the Parents and his single Cowboy Hats make it clear that this New Brunswick boy does some of his best work with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Not that he isn’t a serious songwriter — cuts like You Know How it Is and I Am On My Way show off his sensitive boy-next-door side, and even his zaniest cuts are as well-thought-out and put together as anything by John Hiatt or Lyle Lovett. But I don’t recall either of them ever penning the couplet, “Well I feel just like Jim Carrey / ’Cause I am talking out my ass.” Well, alrighty, then.
