Classic Album Review: Roland Orzabal | Tomcats Screaming Outside

The Tears For Fears frontman's debut solo outing is nothing to shout about.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Everybody wants to rule the world — and make a comeback. That includes former Tears for Fears singer Roland Orzabal.

Apparently the royalties from the Dennis Miller show weren’t paying the bills, prompting Orzabal to emerge from hiding with this debut solo disc of ’80s-style dance-funk cheese and synth-pop balladry. If you’ve been waiting impatiently for an album that combines the best of Tears for Fears, INXS and Frankie Goes to Hollywood — with Orzabal injecting his soaring falsetto as often as humanly possible — Tomcats Screaming Outside is right up your alley. For the other 99.99% of humanity, it’s nothing to shout about.
