Classic Album Review: Kottonmouth Kings | Hidden Stash II: The Kream of the Krop

Cali's hemp-happy hip-hoppers gang a bong and take you on another trip.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Now you know why they call ’em dope beats.

Hemp-happy Cali hip-hop crew Kottonmouth Kings are so hydrophonic they make Afroman seem like a 12-stepper. And not surprisingly, the pro-pot sextet gang a bong and get it on once again on their fourth funky joint Hidden Stash II, a 16-track encomium to the glory of ganja, packed with pumping blunted beats, thumping boombastic bass and smoking grooves that bolster the rapid-fire rhymes. Sure, it’s pretty much the same trip they’ve taken three times before — but hey, it’s not like these guys remember, so why should anybody else?
