Leeroy Stagger delivers a slice of sweet simplicity with his latest single and video More Love Than Money — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The third single from Stagger’s upcoming album Dystopian Weekends, More Love Than Money is a sunny, laid-back charmer that speaks to finding happiness and looking on the bright side of life amidst a world of darkness.
“More Love Than Money is about making major life decisions based on happiness and intuition rather than fear,” says Stagger, who makes a Hitchcockian cameo in the endearing pizza-delivery video. “There are plenty of voices that can talk you out of a dream, but if you follow the ones that guide your heart, you realize that anything is possible — even if it means giving something up to start fresh, or at the bottom of something different. It’s about new beginnings and running off of the love of the people that support you.”
Recorded at the famous Afterlife Studios in Vancouver during the kickoff of a global pandemic, Dystopian Weekends — which is set for release on Oct. 15 — offers a serum of truth with a mix of light and darkness. “I’m very proud of the last couple records I’ve made — I’d tried very hard to reach as many people as possible with the production of those records, whereas this record I made for myself,” Stagger says.
“Instead of referencing what was on the radio at the time, I went back to my favorite Bob Dylan records and records like 421 Ocean Blvd as well as The Silver-Tongued Devil to plant some production seeds. I wanted the songs to speak for themselves. I definitely followed some more traditional guideposts.
“After four years of relentless touring, my band The Rebeltone Sound needed a break. I decided to go to Vancouver and put together a group of friends that I’ve always wanted to record with. I’d always wanted to work on a record with John Raham (Frazey Ford, Destroyer) and it happened that everybody was available that week. Little did we know that a global pandemic was sitting at our doorstep. It all started going down while we were recording. We’re sitting in this big black bunker of a studio while our phones are exploding with all this terrible news, we’re sitting there trying to make a record while trying not to lose our minds. I think you can feel the nervous energy in the playing and the vocal delivery, which actually makes for a beautiful recording.”
More Love Than Money will be available on Friday, Sept. 17 on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. Watch the video for the song above, hear more from Leeroy Stagger below, and keep up with him at his website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
