Late-Night TV Music (Healing Edition) | Jan. 7, 2021

Steve Earle, The Avett Brothers and Julien Baker give us what we need this week.

Healing. It’s something that we all need right now. And something that’s in short supply these days. But as we head into the first weekend of what is sure to be another long year, the Late-Night TV Music gods have helpfully teed up a soothing, restorative lineup of clips.

Start with a double shot of Steve Earle, paying tribute to his late son Justin Townes Earle with gritty, loving covers of Harlem River Blues and Far Away In Another Town for Jimmy Kimmel Live. Then take it down a notch with The Avett Brothers, looking inward (and outward from the balcony) for an intimate performance of I Go To My Heart on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Finally, finish up with Nashville singer-songwriter Julien Baker, waltzing into our hearts with a live rendition of the fittingly titled Faith Healer for A Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Any of them is as good a cure for the January blues as anything else I’ve heard lately.
