Late-Night TV Music (Big Job Edition) | Sept. 14, 2020

Between all these clips, something ought to work for you.

We all have our jobs to do. And if you’re a late-night host on CBS, part of your job on Monday was hyping the Academy of Country Music Awards show airing on the network on Wednesday.

So, being good soldiers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert aired Luke Combs’ socially distanced performance of the tellingly titled Six Feet Apart from his forthcoming deluxe album What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, while The Late Late Show with James Corden aired Kelsea Ballerini’s hot pink rendition of her rather obviously titled single A Country Song. Ah, country music: The place where nuance goes to die. Also working on Monday night: Summer Walker, who took over an abandoned building with her band (and a ton of vegetation) to perform her soulful cut Body on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. If that doesn’t work for you, well, how about a few leftover clips from Friday? You’ve got Snoh Aalegra delivering Whoa on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Flaming Lips taking to their bubbles for God and the Policeman on The Tonight Show, and my fave, South Carolina’s Ranky Tanky dropping some deep Afrobeat with their number Good Time on The Late Show. Great job, that.
