New and interesting or familiar and comfortable? It can be a tough call. Thankfully, the late-night TV music gods had both sides of the coin covered on Thursday. In the brand-spanking category: Atlanta soul singer Baby Rose, making her TV debut with her earthy song Show You on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Speaking of earthy: Bonus points for whoever built a socially distanced indoor garden in what appears to be an underground parking structure. That’s what you call going the whole nine yards. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) Meanwhile, over in the comfortably familiar group you had L.A.’s Dawes, delivering a rooftop performance of their new single St. Augustine at Night for Jimmy Kimmel Live. I’m not sure why Taylor Goldsmith needs all those guitars, but hey, if you got βem, flaunt βem. And he wasn’t alone in creating a little guitar envy: Tori Kelly strapped on a gorgeous Gretsch White Falcon to deliver her new song Unbothered on The Late Late Show With James Corden. I guess she’s familiar too β or, as she would say, too-oo-oo-oo-ooh β but I’m still not comfortable with her. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to put down some sod in my garage. That should be new and interesting.
