Late-Night TV Music (More=Better? Edition) | June 17, 2020

Dirty Projectors, Milky Chance, Jack Johnson, Weezer & Doja Cat make a night of it.

Here in the Late-Night TV Music Department, more is almost always better. So it’s always nice when a show that seldom features musical segments welcomes a band — as Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal did on Wednesday, when Dirty Projectors presented a wonderfully and fittingly female-centric version of Lose Your Love. Also delivering a little more (including kitchen-utensil percussion): Kindred spirits Milky Chance and Jack Johnson, joining forces on Don’t Let Me Down for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Indeed, they will not let you down — which is more than I can say for the usually dependable Weezer, who turned in a surprisingly sloppy rendition of Hero on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Personally, I blame Rivers Cuomo’s hat. But it was still far less distressing than the nightmarish neon-pink netherworld where Doja Cat set her performance of Say So on The Late Late Show With James Corden. Hmm. Maybe more isn’t always better after all.
