Swans, Danny Brown Top Today’s Album Announcements

Michael Gira's Leaving Meaning & Brown's uknowhatimsayin¿ lead the latest lineup.

What do Swans and Danny Brown have in common? You already know the answer: They both announced new albums on Thursday. Detroit rapper Brown’s uknowhatimsayin¿ drops on Oct. 4, though he was good enough to share the first single Dirty Laundry (below) along with the announcement. “This is my version of a stand-up comedy album,” he said. “Most of my close friends now aren’t rappers — they’re comedians and actors. So I wanted to create something that mixed humor with music. Something that was funny but not parody.” At the polar opposite of the humour scale, Michael Gira’s doomtastic Swans 15th studio set Leaving Meaning arrives on Oct. 25, but they also dropped a preview with the audio for the totally appropriate first single It’s Coming It’s Real (above). “Swans is now comprised of a revolving cast of musicians, selected for both their musical and personal character, chosen according to what I intuit best suits the atmosphere in which I’d like to see the songs I’ve written presented,” Gira said. “In collaboration with me, the musicians, through their personality, skill and taste, contribute greatly to the arrangement of the material. They’re all people whose work I admire and whose company I personally enjoy.” As always, there’s plenty more new albums where those came from.
