One is the father of contemporary folk music. The other was a mother of invention. And they both have new music on the way. First and foremost, Bob Dylan announced that he’ll release Rough and Rowdy Ways, his first album of new material since 2012’s Tempest, on June 19. To mark the occasion, he also released the blues-rocker False Prophet, his third new song in as many months. According to reports, the previous tunes — I Contain Multitudes and the 17-minute Kennedy assassination ballad Murder Most Foul — will both be included on the 10-song double album. Also arriving in June: The Mothers 1970, the latest in a continuing series of deluxe box sets chronicling the career of the one and only Frank Zappa. True to its title, this four-disc release will spotlight and celebrate a short-lived lineup of FZ’s Mothers of Invention that included vocalists Flo & Eddie, bassist Jeff Simmons and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. They recorded just one studio album, Chunga’s Revenge, though the bulk of the lineup later appeared in the movie 200 Motels. To whet your appetite, the Zappa Family Trust shared the unearthed cut Portuguese Fenders, one of a slew of live numbers that will make up the bulk of the box. As always, if those don’t grease your wheels, don’t sweat it: There’s plenty more where they came from.
