Las Kellies | Suck This Tangerine

The Argentine grrl group dish up deliciously delightful dance-punk ditties.

THE PRESS RELEASE: “Argentinian grrl group Las Kellies return with new album Suck This Tangerine. Sucking you in, Las Kellies takes us straight back to the party reminding us of what we’ve been missing with their libidinous mix of garage, punk and dub. Thrashing it out on the dancefloor, Suck This Tangerine deals with the difficulties of a society in never ending crisis (Funny Money) to the highs and lows in relationships (He’s Who, Let You Go) and there’s a guest appearance from ex-Kellie Julia Worley on Close Talker. Recorded at home in Buenos Aires, the chemistry of the duo’s formative years remains as does their febrile new wave post-punk sound soaked in fiery dance beats and dub-pop. Their first release since 2016’s Friends & Lovers. Las Kellies are Cecilia Kelly (bass, guitars, vocals) and Silvina Costa (drums, percussion and vocals).

MY TWO CENTS: Sure, these are serious times. You can’t be serious all the time. You gotta lighten up now and then. And when the urge strikes, Argentine duo Las Kellies and their fourth album Suck This Tangerine are just what the fun doctor ordered. It’s got a dozen deliciously delightful dance-punk ditties — all driven by big bass lines and percussively popping grooves, laced with slashing guitars and topped with breezy, breathy vocal melodies. If you’re a fan of Tom Tom Club, Luscious Jackson or even Blondie at their most Rapture-ous, you’ve come to the right place. Load it up, crank it up, lighten up and get down on the nearest dance floor (even if it is your living room).
