Everyone’s a winner, baby. That’s for sure — especially when you’re talking about Wednesday’s late-night musical performances. Your victory lap starts with hip-hop singer-songwriter and pianist D Smoke — the 2019 winner of Netflix’s music competition Rhythm & Flow — who brought his supple, jazzy number Fly (and his vocalist brother Davion Farris) to the dry iced stage of Late Night With Seth Meyers. Next up: 2016 America’s Got Talent champion Grace VanderWaal and her ukulele, keeping things simple and understated with her rendition of Today and Tomorrow on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And finally, who else could it be but 1D and X Factor alum Niall Horan, continuing his Late Late Show With James Corden residency by roaming the halls while singing No Judgement from his imminent album Heartbreak Weather. One problem: I paid far more attention to his surroundings (and lilac threads) than his song. It just goes to show: You can’t win them all.
