Rewinding 2019 | The Indie Albums That Rocked My World

The best and the rest of the year's independently rocking offerings.

I listen to a lot of indie-rock. And I do mean a lot: The first version of the list below had something north of 100 entries. I cut it down by eliminating a lot of names that also appeared in other lists, and by being a little more of a stickler than usual on the definitions of indie and rock. Even so, it’s still a pretty long list. Not sure if that’s good or bad, but here it is:

TINNITIST’S PICK

Fontaines D.C.
Dogrel

ā€œIā€˜m gonna be big!ā€ announces Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten on the first track of his bandā€™s misleadingly titled debut album Dogrel. One assumes heā€™s being sarcastic. But heā€™s not wrong. Relatively speaking, of course. The three-year-old Dublin post-punks are already the toast of the town back home, and this strong showing should earn them plenty of critical kudos and at least cult-level popularity on this side of the pond. A lot of that is down to everyman Chatten, whose brash bark, accented delivery, acerbically poetic lyrics (ā€œMoney is a sandpit of the soulā€) and urgently repeated choruses ground these 11 songs ā€” and follow in the abrasive footsteps of everyone from John Lydon to Sleaford Modsā€™ Jason Williamson. But the bandā€™s angularly clanging guitar lines, grimly chugging Joy Division basslines and relentlessly thumping beats certainly donā€™t hurt their chances.
