Late-Night TV Roundup (Sigh Edition) | Dec. 18, 2019

Mariah, Yola, James Blake & Liam Payne help me get caught up for a brief moment.

Sigh. Welcome to another day of playing catchup — or at least trying. Between all the holiday hoo-hah, a slew of personal affairs and continuing waves of technical bullshit, I’m so far behind I might as well just throw in the towel. One saving grace: The late-night TV music roster is slowing down for the year. Wednesday’s offerings were another predictable blend of holiday fare and pop fluff. The biggest name was clearly Mariah Carey, who crooned (or more likely lip-synched) Oh Santa and Christmas Time Is In The Air Again on The Late Late Show. Me, I’d rather watch Yola singing Faraway Look and cover Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Though James Blake’s electro ballad I’ll Come Too isn’t a bad option either. And since I didn’t get a chance to write up Tuesday’s stuff — I spent most of yesterday in techno-hell, thanks to the general incompetence of Bell Canada and a laptop in its death throes — I’ll include Liam Payne’s performance of Live Forever (not the Oasis number) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Now, on to another futile afternoon of trying to get anything done but ultimately achieving nothing. Sigh.
