WHO ARE THEY? The dynamic duo of former Runaways frontwoman and rock survivor-turned-chainsaw artist Cherie Currie and former Fanny singer-drummer Brie Darling (nee Howard) — who met when the former guested on the latter’s latest album a few years ago.
WHAT IS THIS? A collection of classic-rock covers from the likes of T.Rex, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Buffalo Springfield and others, supplemented with three new original tunes.
WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE? Karaoke night at your leather-loving aunt’s favourite biker bar. Currie and Darling’s weathered pipes and confident swagger complement each other nicely, while Grammy-nominated veteran producer (and Brie’s husband) Dave Darling updates the songs with contemporary tones and textures while retaining their original atmosphere.
WHAT WOULD BE A BETTER TITLE FOR THIS ALBUM? This is Our Time — one of those original songs.
HOW SHOULD I LISTEN TO IT? The same way they seem to have created it — casually and without really taking it too seriously.
WHAT 10 WORDS DESCRIBE IT? Easygoing, classic, earthy, collaborative, warm, outgoing, well-crafted, upbeat, creative, muscular.
WHAT ARE THE BEST SONGS? Straightforward rockers like the glammy T.Rex title cut, The Stones’ Gimme Shelter, Stevie’s Higher Ground and The Kinks’ Do It Again hold up better than the slower and more stylized tunes.
WHAT WILL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY? ‘This sounds like it was way more fun to make than it is to hear.’
HOW OFTEN WILL I LISTEN TO THIS? The novelty value wears off after a couple of spins.
IF THIS ALBUM WERE A DRINK, WHAT KIND OF DRINK WOULD IT BE? Light beer.
SHOULD I BUY, STREAM OR STEAL IT? What could motivate you to spend money on this?
