Late-Night TV Music (Opposite Attractions Edition) | June 19, 2019

Sleater-Kinney and Hollywood Vampires find themselves on common ground.

They say opposites attract. I’m not so sure. Consider these two musical options from Wednesday’s late-night TV talk shows. It would be hard to imagine two bands with less in common. On the one hand, you’ve got reunited and reinvigorated post-punk queens Sleater-Kinney tearing through their spiky and spooky new track Hurry on Home on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. On the other hand, you’ve got the jaded rock gods of Hollywood Vampires — including Alice Cooper, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and actor-boy Johnny Depp — cranking out their hedonistic tantrum I Want My Now and faithfully covering David Bowie’s Heroes on Jimmy Kimmel Live. (The latter is notable not for Depp’s croaky vocal but for the sight of Alice actually strumming a guitar.) I think you’d agree these two acts are pretty much polar opposites in nearly every way. And cliches aside, I suspect they might not have a lot to discuss in a social setting. Apart from their love of Bowie, of course. That’s one thing that unites us all. If only just for one day.
