Solstice
Once is not enough for Luther Dickinson. Hot on the heels of Amour, his recent romantically rootsy romp with Rodeo King Colin Linden, the Mississippi All-Stars singer-guitarist is gearing up for next month’s release of Solstice, an all-star collaboration with Sisters of the Strawberry Moon — a.k.a. a revolving cast of female artists including Amy Helm, Amy LaVere, Birds of Chicago, Sharde Thomas and the Como Mamas.

This (Is What I Wanted to Tell You)
For a guy who doesn’t neatly fit into any bracket, Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner loves to use them in his titles. The Nashville singer-songwriter’s last disc was 2016’s FLOTUS (For Love Often Turns Us Still). For this one, the eclectic alt-country artist has also enlisted a new musical partner: Matthew McCaughan (of Bon Iver and Hiss Golden Messenger), who produced and co-wrote large parts of the album over two years.

On the followup to her 2014 solo album The Voyager, the former Rilo Kiley frontwoman has apparently ditched the rainbow suit — and recruited Beck, Ryan Adams, Ringo Starr, Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Don Was and drummer Jim Keltner. Adams has already compared the results to Blonde on Blonde. Except, you know, with Ringo.

Who is that masked man? Well, apparently it’s Daniel Pitout, the drummer of Nu Sensae and singer of Eating Out. But the truth behind goth-country crooner Orville Peck isn’t nearly as important — or as interesting — as what the Canadian singer-songwriter has to say on his debut full-length.
Spiral Stairs
We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized
Pavement co-founders Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg just can’t get away from each other. Last week, the former released his latest solo set, the electronica-based outlier Groove Denied. This week it’s his old pal’s turn as Kannberg drops his third Spiral Stairs set. He says this one is a “feel-good album.” Which certainly beats the alternative.
Avey Tare
Cows on Hourglass Pond
He may not talk to the animals, but he sure likes to talk about them. Animal Collective guitarist Avey Tare — a.k.a. Dave Portner — sticks to his beastly ways for the title of his third solo album Cows on Hourglass Pond. Whether that extends to the rest of the neo-psychedelicists’ disc is something we’ll have to wait to find out.
