Late-Night TV Music (BAWAMAO Edition) | Feb. 26, 2019

Weezer, Elle King, Lauren Daigle & Nikki Lane all missed the mark on Tuesday.

What’s black and white and meh all over? Tuesday’s musical lineup from the late-night talk shows. The hands-down highlight of the evening should have been Weezer playing their upcoming Black Album track Living in L.A. on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. But for me it falls kind of flat, mostly because Rivers Cuomo seems fairly disinterested — he spends most of the song fixated on the teleprompter (or just staring into the middle distance). Then you had the Beetlejuice-striped Elle King going through the motions of her latest tough-chick number Baby Outlaw for Late Night with Seth Meyers. It has a good kick and all, but honestly I’m already getting tired of King’s faux-badass shtik. To offset that darkness, CCM artist Lauren Daigle brought the light — via the gospel-tinged balladry of You Say and This Girl — to Jimmy Kimmel Live. In a word: Yawn. And finally, speaking of resurrection, Last Call With Carson Daly had alt-country singer-songwriter Nikki Lane close the night with Highway Queen and Send the Sun, two cuts from an album that came out two years ago. Thanks for playing, kids. Better luck next time.
