Albums Of The Week: Kilograms | Beliefs & Thieves

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Beliefs & Thieves, the debut full-length album from The Kilograms, is a bold statement from a band already destined for legendary status.

While the term “supergroup” is an accurate description of The Kilograms, they would prefer the music to stand on its own. Uniting some of the most influential figures from the punk, ska, and reggae scenes to deliver a fresh and captivating sound, the band is formed by seasoned veterans with deep roots in their respective genres. Already making waves with their debut EP and a two-song 7″ release, The Kilograms are set to further solidify their place in the music world with their first full-length LP Beliefs & Thieves.

The band consists of Joe Gittleman, the bassist renowned for his pivotal role in The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, who are credited with bringing ska-punk into the mainstream during the 1990s. Gittleman’s signature grooves are a driving force behind The Kilograms’ dynamic sound. Joining him is Michael McDermott, whose drumming prowess had powered punk legends The Bouncing Souls for 15 years and continues to impress as drummer for rock legend Joan Jett. McDermott’s versatility and rhythmic precision form the backbone of the group’s pulsating energy. Front and center is Sammy Kay, a singer-songwriter celebrated for his contributions to ska and reggae as well as the alt country community, who adds a melodic and soulful edge to the group. Kay’s expressive vocals infuse each track with emotion and depth, perfectly complementing the band’s layered instrumentation. Rounding out the lineup are guitarist Jay Duckworth and keyboardist Craig Gorsline, whose skills bring versatility and texture to the band’s seamless fusion of ska, reggae, and punk influence, while leaving little ear worms that will surely be stuck in your head for days to come.

Beliefs & Thieves showcases The Kilograms’ seamless rise, blending upbeat rhythms with introspective, reggae-infused grooves. This debut LP captures the band’s collective expertise and passion, offering a fresh take on classic genres. Fans of ska, reggae, and punk will find plenty to love in this album, a testament to the enduring creativity and influence of its members.”
