This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
None of them is Brazilian. Only one is female — and judging by the pictures on the CD, she’s far more woman than girl. So much for truth in advertising.
If you want the real goods on New York’s Brazilian Girls, you’ll find it in the tracks of their self-titled debut. Played by a keyboard-fronted trio, its dozen groovy cuts effortlessly smudge the boundaries between acid-jazz, trip-hop, reggae, samba, bossa nova, house and swirly electronica. Meanwhile, velvety vocalist Sabina Sciubba floats above the music like smoke, crooning seductive vocals in one or more of a half-dozen languages. What results is a soothing, bewitching creation perfectly poised between the jazz club and the chillout room. And that’s the truth.
