This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
If you’ve never thought of the trumpet as an instrument of seduction, clearly you’ve never heard jazz maverick Miles Davis’s definitive version of the timeless title ballad. Recorded four decades ago this week with a stellar band featuring Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams, this is not only one of Miles’ most romantic outings and finest live sets, it’s an essential part of any jazz lover’s collection.
TURN-ONS: If the 15-minute title cut doesn’t get the job done, there are equally gorgeous versions of All Of You, Stella By Starlight and others.
TURN-OFFS: No extras — surely they could have pulled a little something out of the vault to sweeten the pot.
GOES WITH: Italian suits, sports cars, fine wine, silk dressing gowns, soulful massages.
