Denielle Bassels belts out a big, bold, boisterous anthem of individuality, independence and self-empowerment with her bluesy jazz single Woman Like Me — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The second single fro the Juno-nominated Toronto chanteuse’s upcoming album It Goes Like This, Woman Like Me kicks down the speakeasy door with its potent, punchy combination of timeless songcraft and timely lyrics — while simultaneously showcasing Bassels’ dynamic range as a world-class singer and songwriter. Sassy, brassy, fiery and full of attitude, the down-and-dirty blues evokes the spirits of Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald, even as it shares a meaningful message that will resonate with women of all ages.
“I’m celebrating the strength of owning who you are without compromise,” says Bassels. “The track highlights sisterhood and empowerment. It’s a fiery rejection of anyone who dares to underestimate a woman. I intend it as a declaration of independence and self-worth.” Or, as she says in the song: “I do what I want without apology.”
Co-written with her sister Amber, Woman Like Me is propelled by the exuberant soloing of pianist Ewen Farncombe, the growling trumpet of Alexis Baro, the understated guitar work of Julien Bradley Combs, and the raucously swinging rhythms of drummer Andrew Scott and bassist George Koller. Bassels and Thom McKay co-produced the track, which was recorded live off the floor by Vic Florencia at Noble St. Studios in Toronto, with additional recording by McKay at Exeter Sound Studios. McKay edited the cut, Florencia mixed it and Phil Bova handled the mastering.
Toronto-born sensation Bassels captivates audiences with her power-packed fusion of jazz manouche, blues, folk, and pop. Denielle’s uniquely powerful voice delivers solid heart punches and unforgettable performances. From sweet Doris Day-esque melodies to the ferocity of Big Mama Thornton, her vocal versatility, coupled with her natural storytelling flair, creates an enchanting concert experience that lingers in the minds of her listeners.
Drawing inspiration from her experiences, Denielle continues to push boundaries, seeking out new collaborations and experimenting with different sounds and textures. Her work defies easy categorization but is always grounded in authenticity, emotional depth, and a deep respect for the jazz tradition. As she prepares for the release of It Goes Like This, Bassels is poised to cement her status as a visionary artist in the modern jazz scene.
