Classic Album Review: Kenny Colman | Straight Ahead

The Winnipeg singer & a snappy big band expertly serve up a slate of standards.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Lounge-singer extraordinaire Kenny Colman has been on The Tonight Show, sung with the London Philharmonic and rubbed elbows with Frank Sinatra. Not bad for a kid from Winnipeg’s North End, eh?

His latest upbeat disc Straight Ahead ain’t so bad itself. Backed by a snappy, swinging big band, Mr. C smoothly, expertly serves up a selection of standards — Come Rain Or Come Shine, I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good), My Funny Valentine — in his light-sandpaper voice, which splits the diff between Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Andy Williams.
