Classic Album Review: Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci | Spanish Dance Troupe

The Welsh quintet have a love for heartfelt melodies in sunshiny ’60s pop settings.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

This quirky Welsh quintet — whose name supposedly translates to Dimwit Reproductive Monkey, whatever that means — are often compared to avant-pop U.S. acts such as Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel.

The resemblance goes deeper than a fondness for three-word non-sequitur names, though. Like those acts, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci also share a love for heartfelt melodies rendered in sunshiny ’60s settings, although they tend to favour the twee pop of The Kinks or the medieval-tinged folk of Fairport Convention over the more accessible sounds of The Beatles and Beach Boys. And, of course, they appreciate a dose of sheer sonic silliness, as displayed in the vocal chant freak-out Hair Like Monkey Teeth Like Dog or the eccentric, Sparks-style popper Poodle Rockin.’ Cheeky monkeys.
