Bad Cactus Brass Band welcome you Back For Another Round of bumptious, boisterous brilliance on their entertaining and energized new album — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The long-overdue comeback disc from the recently reanimated, fun-loving Phoenix octet picks up where they left off on their 2010 debut Arizona Mardi Gras — and then takes it to the next level. Furiously fusing funk, pop, rap, soul, ska-punk, Latin-rock and pretty much anything else you can think of, BCBB deliver a high-spirited hybrid of old-school NOLA street jazz and contemporary frat-bash lunacy that’s guaranteed to get the party started — and keep it going until the cops shut it down.
The dozen-track set balances their clever, personable originals like the title cut with bold-as-brass instrumental covers of pop and rock classics like Pixies’ Waves Of Mutilation, Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon, TLC’s Waterfalls and Destiny’s Child’s Bills, Bills, Bills. Whether putting the trumpets, saxophone and trombones front and center or spotlight guest vocalists from their hometown, the band supply a constant party of singing, shouting, blasting and grooving, anchored by tuba and a pair of drummers.
From 2009-2015, Bad Cactus Brass Band played over 100 events each year in the Phoenix area. They opened for Rebirth Brass Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and even started a Downtown Phoenix Mardi Gras parade and festival. But eventually, their relentless gigging left the band in a rut and they took a six-year hiatus. In the new album’s title track, vocalist, trombone player and bandleader Benjie Messer raps that when “this band retired, at the time, I was sure we couldn’t rise any higher.” Back For Another Round proves that wrong. That same verse ends by promising to “blow these horns like our head’s gonna burst and make the sequel better than the first.”
