“I was in rehab when I first heard the beat,” the artist shares. “It was on a CD someone burned for me, but I couldn’t come up with any lyrics while I was there. It wasn’t until my first day out that the words finally came to me. I knew I needed to keep my mind occupied, so I played the track on repeat until something clicked.”
The turning point came from the well-known Alcoholics Anonymous saying, “Secrets keep me sick.” This idea resonated deeply with Elizma, reflecting the shame and isolation many face in addiction. The lyrics of Secrets are a raw expression of this internal struggle and a stark warning about the dangers of hiding pain instead of seeking help.
The artist recounts her fear of falling back into old habits after rehab, a concern compounded by growing up in a community where substance use was seen as a form of competition. “I wasn’t even 18 when I started, and I felt like I had to keep up with everyone around me. “This song is a protest against the normalization of excessive drug use in pop culture,” states Elizma. “Kids are hearing about these substances in songs and losing their lives because of it. I believe we artists need to recognize our responsibility — words can have devastating consequences!”
