Parlour Magic stylishly traverse space and time with their retro-futuristic new album Saturn Return — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The N.Y.C. synth-pop outfit’s latest release makes it clear they have a few new tricks up their sleeves — but haven’t forgotten how to employ the old ones to thrilling effect either. Bridging the sounds of classic ’80s icons with a cutting-edge contemporary sensibility, these 10 tracks create and inhabit a smartly sophisticated, lushly layered sonic netherworld that is simultaneously familiar and timeless while living urgently in the moment.
Written by producer and media artist Luc Bokor-Smith, Saturn Return marks a bold step forward for Parlour Magic, expanding upon the rich sonic universe of their 2020 debut The Fluid Neon Origami Trick. Analog synths — accompanied by guitars and basses played by German multi-instrumentalist Florian Stepper — form a vivid backdrop for Bokor-Smith’s rich vocal performances. His lyrics, centering around recurring themes of passing time and fading memory are among his most evocative to date. The album was produced in conjunction with Fab Dupont, and recorded over the course of nearly three years in New York, Las Vegas and Berlin.
In addition to his work helming Parlour Magic, Bokor-Smith has created numerous large-scale live multimedia installations for public and private clients, and produced, mixed and engineered for a diverse selection of artists in the U.S. and abroad. He works out of Flux Studios in the East Village.
