Classic Album Review: Me First & The Gimme Gimmes | Ruin Jonny’s Bar Mitzvah

Fat Mike & co. bash, crash & goof their way through a set of classics & covers.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

For once, they’re not kidding. Sort of.

For this live album, NOFX’s Fat Mike and his gang of pop-punk cover boys squeeze into powder-blue tuxes, don yarmulkes and white shoes, and kick out the jams at an actual bar mitzvah. Unless this disc (which includes video of the event) is one amazingly elaborate ruse. Either way, you get to hear the boys bash, crash and goof their way through overdriven, under-rehearsed versions of cheese like Stairway To Heaven and Come Sail Away, along with family fare like Auld Lang Syne and Hava Nagila. What, no Bird Dance? Oy!
