Classic Album Reviews: Jay Farrar | Stone, Steel & Bright Lights / Jay Bennett & Edward Burch | The Palace at 4 a.m. (Part 1)

Two rootsy Jays prove there's life after Jeff Tweey — just not the same level of press.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Former Uncle Tupelo singer-guitarist Jay Farrar drops a likable live album of his earthy ’n’ smoky post-Son Volt solo work, appended with encore covers of Syd Barrett’s Lucifer Sam and Neil Young’s Like A Hurricane.

Meanwhile, ex-Wilco utility player Jay Bennett reissues his 2002 sorta-solo debut, containing a gorgeously produced assortment of eclectic, Elvis Costello-like roots-pop. And along the way, they both confirm that there is indeed life after Jeff Tweedy — even if it doesn’t include the same amount of press.
