Classic Album Review: Luke Doucet | Outlaws (Live & Unreleased)

The Canadian roots-rock guitar hero comes packing twin drummers for this set.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Clearly, Luke Doucet is a man who loves a big bottom. Musically speaking, of course.

The ex-Winnipeg guitar hero, sometime Veal frontman and intermittent Sarah McLachlan sideman comes packing twin drummers on his latest solo joint Outlaws, underpinning his twangy, prickly axework and plaintive vocals with a lurching, clattery syncopation — and giving this set of mostly live recordings a sound midway between a rootsier Tom Waits and a blusier John K. Samson. How could you leave that behind?
