Classic Album Review: Har Mar Superstar | The Handler

Sean Tillman maintains his rep as the funkiest (& sexiest) Minnesotan since Prince.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Har Mar Superstar has to be seen to be believed. Even then, it’s not that easy.

Basically, the husky Har Mar is a doppelganger for porn hedgehog Ron Jeremy. And his stage act — at least, the one I’ve seen — finds him stripping down to his skivvies and breakdancing while crooning disco ditties raunchy enough to make Peaches blush. In the studio, Har Mar is just as unbelievable — but for better reasons. On his remarkable third album The Handler, the Minnesotan born Sean Tillman once again shows off his real moves: He plays several instruments, has a supple yet strong voice that compares favourably with Stevie Wonder and pens inescapably hooky disco, soul and hip-hop hip-swivellers with cheeky titles like Back The Camel Up. So whether you believe his Superstar shtik or not, it’s easy to see that Tillman might be the most talented, funkiest and sexiest Minnesotan since a certain purple-loving rocker.
