Classic Album Review: Tangiers | Never Bring You Pleasure

Sharp songcraft & insistent hooks help the Torontonians rise to the top of the class.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

These days, there are more spiky-coiffed, spiky-guitared retro-rock bands than you can shake a tired shtik at.

But Toronto’s Tangiers rise to the top of the class with sharp songcraft and insistent hooks on their tight ’n’ bright second CD Never Bring You Pleasure. An esoteric list of influences that touches on everyone from The Rolling Stones and The Clash to The Knack and reggae doesn’t hurt either. In fact, it goes a long way to making this a disc that not only evades the sophomore slump, but actually one-ups their much-heralded debut. Sometimes the title doesn’t say it all.
